BEST MUSIC OF 2012

The interesting about 2012 was the somber & somewhat apocalyptic undertone of much of the music released. There were more vibes of sadness, death, extreme heartbreak (there’s a difference), desolation, sparseness, and bleakness than years prior. To put it visually, it was like sound-tracking a once-beautiful world that became empty, grey, and cold overnight. How and when we find music makes a difference on our lives. It enhances everything we do, and for me this year’s connection was no different. Whether I was pulling into a new city on tour, worn thin under a sunken dusk skyline listening to Goodnight London by Money, or spinning some more upbeat fare like M.I.A’s Bad Girls for an after party parade of drunken friends, the new music cemented itself to these moments, in this time, in this year, forever in my brain. It’s stamped there. I’ve made mention of this ‘technique’ or phenomenon many times in past blogs - this idea of sound-tracking my life is the one thing that gives my existence the most meaning.

I personally went through some tough times this year and the music I discovered reflected that. Of course we can mentally and emotionally cater whatever we want to fit our moods, so I’m trying to be objective. I can say with confidence that the music of 2012 dealt a lot with two specific themes: heartbreak and desolation - the former more in the lyrics, the latter more in the production. We had a few years of the warm beachy sounds, retro 80’s vibes, 60’s pysch, shoegaze, IDM, electronic, etc. We had songs about parties, and drugs, and failed relationships. But this year the songs just got really sad. Instead of a handful of melancholy, there was an abundance of it. One more devastating than the other. Which is great for a guy like me who feeds on that stuff and finds comfort in it. Just take a look at tracks like Everybody’s Heart’s Breaking Now by Lavender Diamond, Gigantic by Eddi Front, Feels Like The End by MIkky Ekko, and Woman by The 1975. All devastating. And that’s not even scratching the surface. Nearly every single song on this list seemed to portray a more hopeless world than usual.

Production changed to a more minimal and lonesome sound. Even the warm songs sounded sad. It wasn’t just that the dubstep trend continued, but everyone from folk artists such as Bon Iver, to mainstream relics like Usher implemented a vibe that’s grown increasingly more cold and forlorn. Artists like Beach House and Bear In Heaven who release music I would call ‘indie pop’, which is usually warmer, had an underlying breakdown of abandonment behind their production. Fitting that this happened in 2012. And to push the envelope even further, I dare you to listen to Burial’s Kindred EP, or Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend and not picture yourself in a post-apocalyptic world of black skies and cold damp streets leading nowhere.

No the world won’t end (Thank you Pernice Brothers for pointing this out years ago), but the year just didn’t seem real. I had an unusual abundance of friends tell me they had felt very “off” all year, as if life had become a some sort of fake reality, almost like a movie. The things, people, places around us were no longer real. What was going on out the window past the kitchen door was not was it used to be. It was strange and different. I certainly felt this in 2012, and the overwhelming sensations peaked in mid-fall. Never have I seen so many of my friends deal with such personal inner reflection, sadness, confusion, and longing. The year will stand out as a year that seemed to come unhinged, sterile, and broken.

On the positive side, some of the trends were a welcome change. The rise in indie R&B/alt music is an increasing pattern that I welcome. The Weeknd started this in 2011, what I was calling Alternative R&B, and a slew of artists went in that direction. It’s one of the best genres to play off of for melody, feel, beauty, and sadness. Mixing this formula with an indie spin is something I hope more acts will embrace. It’s something that I’ve been working on for years but never had the guts to release myself.

As I mentioned, the year-end’s playlist pairs wonderfully with desolation. Picture yourself wondering these empty city streets in a world where nothing makes sense. The future is different than we thought. It’s not all robots and electronic blips. It’s emptiness and despair. It’s crumbling architecture. It’s the dust from the ash. It’s the moon. And a cold sunset. Summer’s that go nowhere and mean nothing. And winter’s that leave you driving aimlessly over black ice that has trapt our once optimistic spirits below the surface, under the cracks. Frozen there, at least until the pavement warms and opens up again. And there is hope that it will.

Yes, there were a few happier moments, notably positive tracks, and overall classics released this year that transcended me to other places. They allowed me to close my eyes and imagine being in the song, and in the story by the sheer power and purity in the artist’s delivery. It didn’t feel like processed year in any way. Artists who delivered their music sang with more conviction than I remember hearing in a long time. These aren’t just songs. They’re religion. And they’re passion. And they’re truth. When Lost In The Trees sings about his deceased mother in “Golden Eyelids” there’s no denying the pain. When Dry The River shout about how giving your best just isn’t good enough sometimes, you feel exactly what he went through. And when Mirel Wagner portrays herself as a suicidal child in “Joe”, it’s nothing less than paralyzing. I invite you to pay close attention to the conviction and emotion in these wonderful vocalists’ performances. It was a treasure to be able to dive into those moments and escape with them. That is what I will take away most from this year’s music.
This list was (painstakingly) made by combing through thousands of songs collected over the past year, filtering out the average, and ranking the best of the best according to my personal tastes and opinions. The music I’m sharing may seem like a lot to sift through, but nothing was haphazardly placed. Every song here is noteworthy and was positioned where it is for a reason. It brings me pleasure to share this list of amazing music with you.
